To coincide with the Arts Worldwide Bangladesh Festival, one of Britain's flagship art galleries hosts a ground breaking programme of contemporary art, music, film, fashion, photography, performance, digital media and literature, conceived in collaboration with leading British Asian cultural provocateurs. This provides a stage for the interdisciplinary artists to challenge preconceived notions of tradition, ethnicity, difference and desire - refining what it means to be British and Asian at the turn of the century. There are plans for accompanying film and tv screenings, a website, debates and workshops on music, art, performance and digital media hosted by invited specialists.

Some of the artists involved include Hamad Butt, Simon Tegala, sehez 360, Bidisha, Harsha Patel, Mohini Chandra, Pratibha Parmar, Blackstarliner, Tara Arts, Suki Dhanoa, Runa Islam, Outcaste New Breed, Blaak - Aaron Sharif, State of Bengal, Take-Away Productions, Sevgi Yumakci, Ram & Fab, Joi Soundsystem. Programmed by Ilze Strazdina and Gavin Fernandes. See pages 20 and 21 for gallery tours, talks, films and workshops in connection with this exhibition.

multimedia installations

This project, created by 16 - 25 year olds from the East End, explores the issue of cultural identity amongst young British Asians through the innovative use of photography and multimedia technology. Images produced in workshops led by professional photographers will be exhibited in large scale format at a number of sites and spaces during the Festival, including Old Spitalfields Market, outdoors on Brick Lane, and at the Whitechapel Art Gallery. 'Identity' as a theme will provoke examinations of how the young people perceive themselves and are perceived by others, both within and outside their community. The images will also broadly draw out the notion of 'family,' traditionally a strong Bangladeshi concern, extending the category from blood relations to friends and gangs. This installation will be designed and curated by Clive Sall with Ruhul Amin, Annie Bungeroth, Anthony Lam, Phil Maxwell, Rehan Ramil, Jagtar Semplay.
