Asian Dub Foundation

A Barbican promotion in association with Arts Worldwide

An unmissable gig from the UK's self-proclaimed '21st century electronic troubadours.' ADF have long been on the record as gleaning traditional folk sounds from their parents' record collections, mutating them technologically for their own musical purposes. Now they get to mix live on stage with Bauls and drummers from Bangladesh. With their brand of hard jungle rhythms, indo-dub basslines, sitar inspired guitars and fast-chat lyrics, ADF are one of Britain's most exciting live bands. Never ducking the bigger, wider issues of social justice and racism in their lyrics, ADF have played a key role highlighting the contemporary experience of Asians in Britain. Industry recognition includes a Mercury Prize nomination, an NME Premier Award, and the BBC Network East Award for Asian achievement in music. Currently recording their third album, ADF are one of the reasons that all things Asian are now deemed definitively 'cool.' This is the band's first London gig this year, so please book early to avoid disappointment. Throughout the day on 18 July a fascinating range of artists will give free live performances on the Barbican's Free Stage.

Mystical Voices

a concert featuring Farida Parveen and Bidit Lal Das with Himangshu Goswami

Mystical songs and poems provide a strong spiritual undercurrent in Bangladesh, as popular in folk shows at village fairs as in the sophisticated concert halls of Dhaka. Farida Parveen and Bidit Lal Das are two singers with a huge following who very rarely perform in London. Both artists were trained in Indian classical music but are renowned for their performances of Bengali song. Farida Parveen, originally from Kushtia and currently living in Dhaka, was the first classical artist to sing refined interpretations of the exquisite poetry of Lalon Shah. Lalon Shah was a 17th century mystic and prolific poet whose shrine in Kushtia is a place of pilgrimage for spiritual singers from all over the country. From Sylhet, Bidit Lal Das is considered to be one of the greatest performers of Bengali folk song and has toured extensively in the States and Far East as well as in Europe and South Asia. He specialises in the Sufi songs of Hasan Raja, a 19th century zamindar (landlord) who renounced a life of tyrannical womanising to become a devout philosopher and a writer of simple and moving devotional songs. Himangshu Goswami comes from a very well known musical family of Sylhet. He came to the UK in the early eighties and is now acclaimed as a singer of international fame who performs regularly in leading cities in Europe, Australia, Canada and the USA.
